Just 110 Wallets Drove 99.6% of RLUSD Payments on XRP Ledger as Investigation Exposes Bot Activity

Key takeaways Just 110 wallets generated 99.6% of RLUSD payments Millions of tiny transfers carried only $7,722 Larger RLUSD transactions still moved $7.33 billion An investigation into Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin has uncovered an unusual pattern on the XRP Ledger: just 110 wallets generated almost every recorded RLUSD payment over a 30-day period, despite transferring relatively little money. Blockchain analytics firm Bitquery examined 7.82 million RLUSD payments between September 19 and October 18, finding that approximately 7.79 million transactions, or 99.6%, originated from a closely connected cluster of wallets. Those transactions collectively transferred only 7,722 RLUSD, raising questions about whether headline payment counts accurately represent genuine network adoption. How 110 Wallets Generated Nearly Eight Million RLUSD Payments According to Bitquery, the wallet cluster repeatedly sent tiny RLUSD payments to three receiving addresses. The average transfer was approximately 0.00099 RLUSD, equivalent to about one-tenth of a cent. The wallets followed similar patterns, sending funds roughly every 30 seconds while sharing common funding sources and collection addresses. Investigators traced funding to addresses labeled as Binance wallets and identified transfers returning through an apparent exchange deposit account. However, Bitquery could not determine who operated the cluster. The findings do not establish that Binance or Ripple organized the transactions. The activity was inexpensive. Researchers calculated that approximately 8.6 million transactions, including XRP transfers, incurred just 495 XRP in network fees, worth around $648 during the analyzed period. This highlights a challenge in interpreting XRPL activity , where transaction counts can rise dramatically without a comparable increase in transferred value. Why RLUSD Transaction Activity Suddenly Collapsed Bitquery found that the cluster accounted for approximately 45.6% of all XRP Ledger account-to-account payments, across currencies, between October 8 and October 14. On September 26, RLUSD activity reached 573,589 payments, although only 388 transferred at least one RLUSD. The automated activity began declining on October 14 and had largely stopped by October 16. That period coincided with Cross River Bank's October 15 announcement concerning RLUSD integration into its banking infrastructure. Researchers found no corresponding network fee spike or protocol change explaining the slowdown, but could not establish why the wallets stopped operating. The investigation introduces a different perspective on Ripple's expanding stablecoin activity , where growing token supply and rising transaction counts measure different aspects of adoption. What the $7.33 Billion in Larger RLUSD Payments Reveals Removing payments worth less than one RLUSD leaves 14,600 transactions totaling approximately $7.33 billion during the same 30-day period. However, that value was heavily concentrated. Ten wallets accounted for approximately 82% of larger payment volume, while issuer minting and redemption activity represented a significant share. These figures indicate substantial value moving between relatively few addresses, rather than millions of independent customers making commercial payments. They also do not represent $7.33 billion in unique purchases, since internal transfers, issuance and redemptions may move the same underlying money multiple times. The distinction matters as Ripple expands institutional RLUSD services and develops new brokerage settlement applications. Meanwhile, XRPL's AI payment ecosystem has demonstrated a similar gap between transaction counts and the actual value transferred. The findings do not establish that RLUSD lacks legitimate demand. Instead, they underscore the importance of examining transfer sizes, wallet concentration and economic activity when evaluating blockchain usage. For XRP holders, the analysis also reinforces the distinction between transaction fees and investment demand. RLUSD payments require XRP for network fees, but millions of extremely small transfers do not necessarily translate into substantial XRP buying pressure. As Ripple pursues additional payment partnerships , independently verified settlement activity may provide a more meaningful measure of adoption than transaction counts alone.
